BMI Files Petition Against North American Concerts Promoters Association
BMI, a leader in music rights management, filed Federal Rate Court action against the North American Concert Promoters Association (NACPA) to determine more fair compensation for musicians and songwriters for revenues from live performances license fees. Less than 0.19% of that revenue made its way to musicians.
BMI argues that live concerts depend entirely on performers/composers and the current licensing fees are unfairly small. They propose a blanket license fee of 1.15% of gross revenues from July 1, 2018-December 31, 2022 and retroactive fees from July 1st, 2018 through June 30, 2018.

Last month, a report was released which showed that musicians only made 12% of all music revenue last year. Hopefully with organizations like BMI and legislation like the Music Modernization Act standing up for musicians, that percentage will begin to rise.
